Panama's External Debt accounted for 30.6 % of the country's Nominal GDP in 2016, compared with the ratio of 30.0 % in the previous year. Panama's External Debt: % of Nominal GDP data is updated yearly, available from Dec 1993 to Dec 2016. The data reached an all-time high of 65.2 % in Dec 1995 and a record low of 27.0 % in Dec 2012. CEIC calculates External Debt as % of Nominal GDP from monthly External Debt and annual Nominal GDP. The Ministry of Economy and Finance provides External Debt in USD. The National Institute of Statistics and Census provides Nominal GDP in local currency based on benchmark year 2007. The International Monetary Fund average market exchange rate is used for currency conversions. External Debt as % of Nominal GDP prior to 2007 is calculated from annual External Debt and Nominal GDP based on previous benchmark year 1996. External Debt covers Public sector only.

In the latest reports of Panama, Current Account recorded a deficit of 506.2 USD mn in Jun 2017. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) increased by 1.5 USD bn in Jun 2017. Panama's Direct Investment Abroad expanded by 103.2 USD mn in Jun 2017. Its Foreign Portfolio Investment increased by 998.4 USD mn in Jun 2017. The country's Nominal GDP was reported at 14.8 USD bn in Jun 2017.
