The US registered trade deficit of USD 72bn in September, lower than the August figure of USD 77bn. Both exports and imports contracted by -3.28% y/y and -2.31% y/y, respectively.

In the first nine months of 2019, total exports and imports declined by 1.17% y/y and 0.32% y/y, respectively.

China, which is a key trading partner, traditionally records trade surplus with the US. For the first nine months of the year, the US reported a trade deficit in goods with China in the amount of USD 266bn, improving from a deficit of USD 307bn during the same period last year.
