Retail sales in Brazil fell by 1.7% m/m in June 2021


After growing for two months in a row, the volume of retail sales in Brazil declined by 1.7% m/m in June. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), which calculates the index, the volume of sales declined in five out of eight segments analysed.
Notably, sales of textiles, apparel and footwear decreased by 3.6% m/m in the sixth month of the year, followed by computers, communication equipment and office supplies (-3.5% m/m). On a yearly basis, however, the volume of retail sales grew by 6.3% y/y in June, after increasing by 23.7% y/y and 15.9% y/y in April and May, respectively, on the back of a low base effect.
