  The US trade deficit widened further in December 2021, rising to USD 80.7bn from USD 79.3bn in the previous month, seasonally adjusted. On an annual basis, the deficit increased by 22.6%. Imports and exports increased by a similar margin in December, by 1.6% and 1.5% m/m respectively.

Overall for 2021, the US trade deficit amounted to USD 859.1bn, the highest on record and 27% higher compared to 2020. Imported goods and services amounted to USD 3.4tn, 20.5% up from 2020 while the value of exports rose to USD 2.5tn from 2.1tn in 2020, an increase of 18.5%.
Throughout 2021 the US economy has been recovering from the COVID-19 shock and US consumers were able to increase spending. However, the global supply chain crisis increased the prices of inputs which also contributed to the higher value of imports. US trade deficit is expected to widen even further in 2022, with FocusEconomics consensus forecast standing at USD 926bn.
