In India, the four main metro cities – Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata - were the hub for most economic activity in the 1990s. However, with the expansion in the services sector, cities such as Bangalore and Pune gained strong positions in the labour market. The Naukri JobSpeak data captures how the employment scenario has evolved across Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities.

It is interesting to observe that the Tier 2 cities such as Jaipur (Rajasthan), Cochin (Kerala), and Ahmedabad (Gujarat) tripled their employment offerings by FY2020, as compared to Tier 1 cities such as Mumbai (Maharashtra). Amongst the Tier 1 cities, Kolkata (West Bengal) has sharply increased employment opportunities between FY2017 and FY2020, from 1,619 to 2,733.

The index in the cities of Pune (Maharashtra) and Bangalore (Karnataka) has also grown substantially, the former increasing from 760 in FY2010 to 2,780 in FY2020, while the latter grew from 749 to 2,463.
