The current account in Brazil recorded a surplus of USD 3.7bn in August 2020, the fifth positive result in a row, compared to a deficit of USD 3bn in August 2019. The trade surplus increased on an annual basis to USD 5.96bn in August 2020 compared to USD 3.55bn a year earlier. The reduction in economic activity also had a significant impact on the demand of foreign services.

The services balance posted a deficit worth USD 1.35bn in August 2020 compared to USD 2.23bn in August 2019. The foreign companies’ profits also declined, pushing the income deficit to USD 1.2bn from USD 4.7bn in August 2019. 

On a year-to-date basis, the current account deficit totalled USD 8.5bn in August 2020, compared to USD 34bn from January to August 2019. Notably, the travel deficit fell to USD 1.9bn in August, year-to-date, from USD 7.9bn one year earlier.
