The US real GDP increased by 4% on a seasonally-adjusted annualised basis in Q4 2020 following substantial volatility in the previous two quarters, which saw the economy grow by 33.4% in Q3 and contract by 31.4% due to the COVID-19 restrictions being imposed and then eased.

On the same basis, personal consumption expenditures increased by 2.5% in Q4 2020, gross private domestic investment by 25.3% and goods and services exports by 22%. However, this was offset by a 29.5% rise in imports, resulting in a negative contribution to the quarterly growth rate. Government consumption expenditures and gross investment declined for a second successive quarter, by 1.2%. Overall, real GDP declined by 3.5% in 2020 after growing by 2.2% in 2019.
