Due to the COVID-19 impact, during the first nine months of 2020, the disposable income per capita in China grew slightly by 0.6% y/y in real terms, while the consumption expenditure per capita declined by the significant 6.6% y/y in real terms.

According to data released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics, the urban households were hit harder than the rural ones. In terms of disposable income per capita, the rural households saw an increase of 1.6% y/y in real terms compared to a 0.3% decline y/y for the urban households. Although the pandemic hit consumption in general, the decline in the consumption expenditure per capita for rural households was the significant 5.2 pp less than the drop in consumption for the urban households in the first three quarters.
