Mexico's economy registered some improvement in Q4 2020, with GDP increasing on a real-terms seasonally-adjusted basis by 3.1% q/q according to the advance national accounts estimates released by the Mexican statistical office (INEGI). This led to a softer seasonally adjusted decline of 4.6% y/y in Q4 2020, following steeper contractions in Q2 and Q3. Overall the economy shrank by 8.5% on a year-average basis in 2020 compared to 2019, the biggest drop since the Great Depression in the 1930s.
In Q4, secondary activities, including manufacturing, contracted by 3.4% y/y and tertiary activities that include services by 5.3% y/y. However, primary activities such as agriculture, fishing and forestry increased by 4.9% y/y.
