Amid the COVID-19 pandemic and its negative effects on economic activity, Brazil recorded an increase in the number of formal jobs in 2020. The Ministry of Economy’s General Register of Employed and Unemployed (CAGED) reported a net gain of 142,690 formal jobs in 2020, as the number of hires (15,166,221) exceeded the number of dismissals (15,023,531).

CAGED recorded net gains in construction (+112,174), general industry (+95,588), agriculture and livestock (+61,637), and trade, which includes repair of vehicles and motorcycles (+ 8,130). In December 2020 alone, CAGED recorded a net loss of 67,906 formal jobs, less than the net loss of 307,311 formal jobs in December 2019.
