Japan’s consumer confidence index (CCI) increased to 39 points in December 2019, 0.4 points higher than the November 2019 figure. This is the highest value since May 2018, reached after the index bottomed out at 35.8 in September 2019. The consumer confidence kept the downward trend throughout most of 2019. In January 2019 for instance it stood at 41.8 points.

The uptick in December 2019 was driven mainly by four sub-categories. The willingness to buy durable goods and the indicator for the overall livelihood improved to 36.7 and 38.2, respectively. Meanwhile, both income growth and employment indicators remained relatively stable at 39.7 and 41.3 points, respectively.
