Industrial Production on the Rise in FYR Macedonia

CEIC Macro Watch Global #35 - August 29, 2014 The Industrial Production Index (IPI) for FYR Macedonia increased by 4.9% in June 2014 on an annual basis. In the period January–June 2014 the index surged by 4.5% compared to the same period of the previous year. The rise was mostly driven by the staggering increase in capital goods production which shot up by 70.6% on an annual basis in June, following a 61.8% and a 77.0% annual increase during April and May this year. Other main industrial groups, which also exhibited positive growth in the period, were durable consumer goods (36.1%) and non-durable goods (6.4%). On the other hand, energy production plummeted by 26.9% while intermediate goods excluding energy remained fairly stable, growing by just 0.2% in June. The positive development in industrial production has lifted the industrial capacity utilization rate, which measures the extent to which the country’s potential output levels are being reached. The utilization rate in Macedonia rose to 61.2% in June 2014.
