China's manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) improved for the second consecutive month to 51.1 in July 2020. The PMI published by the National Bureau of Statistics has been above the 50-threshold since March, indicating industrial activity expansion and strong recovery of the Chinese manufacturing sector after the sharp decline to 35.7 in February.

The indices for production and new orders were above the 50-threshold in July, while that for new export orders, inventories and imports were below the threshold. The employment index slightly improved from 49.1 in June to 49.3, but remained on a contractionary territory, which was another sign for the fragile labour market condition in China after the weak consumer confidence data published earlier in July.
