Controversial US shelter inflation measure slows sharply
When it comes to measuring US inflation, the cost of shelter is key. But given that property prices are considered to reflect investment rather than consumption, the Bureau of Labor Statistics compiles "owner's equivalent rent,” a metric of hypothetical shelter costs that is often criticized. OER accounts for about 26% of the overall US consumer price index.
